Child Abuse Suspect Dies In Batam Prosecutor's Detention Center

BATAM - Sekupang Police Chief, Barelang, Kompol Benhur Gultom explained the chronology of the prisoner with the initials EB (34) who died by committing suicide at the Batam City Kejari Detention Center.

"EB is a prisoner of the Sekupang Police for cases of sexual abuse of minors. His status is temporarily placed in the Batam City Prosecutor's detention cell for phase II process after the case file is declared complete (P-21) by the Public Prosecutor," said Benhur as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, December 5.

He explained, at 09.10 WIB, three Sekupang Police personnel escorted two detainees, namely EB and J from the Sekupang Police to the Batam District Attorney.

Currently, EB detainees are in the process of submitting phase II, while detainee J was brought to the Batam District Court as a witness in another case.

"Before being delegated, EB detainees had undergone a health check in accordance with the SOP applicable at the Barelang Police Kilinik at 09.30 WIB," he said.

After that, at around 10.00 WIB, the EB detainee arrived at the Batam District Attorney's office, and was taken to the temporary detention cell room by Bripka Budi Sugiarto, then locked in a cell by a prosecutor named Kukuh Afif.

At 10.50 WIB, he continued, a Sekupang Police officer heard screams from inside the temporary detention cell from the room where EB was being held.

The knife sounded like hanging. Officers immediately ran towards the cell and found some trying to provide help by lowering the EB hanging using a cloth around its neck, "he said.

The cloth, he said, was entangled in an iron rod in the cell.

Based on the results of the post-mortem on EB's body, he said, it showed that there were abrasions on the neck due to blunt violence and signs of weak death.

From the examination of witnesses at the scene of the case, it was concluded that EB's death was allegedly caused by hanging himself.

"And the incident has been reported to the Batam City Police for further investigation, because the locus (the crime scene) and tempus is in the Batam Kota jurisdiction," said Benhur.

Separately, the Head of Section (Kasi) for Intelligence at the Batam District Attorney's Office, Tiyan Andesta, said the Batam District Attorney's Office was still investigating the motive behind the prison's suicide.

"Further investigations will be carried out to reveal the exact cause of suicide that occurred in the Batam Kejari detention cell," he said.
