Jakarta's Air Quality Improves, This Is The Reason

JAKARTA - Jakarta's air quality is said to have started to improve recently. It had gone viral on social media for photos of Jakarta's sky that looked clean, until the view of Mount Gede Pangrango was seen.

Deputy for Meteorology of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Guswanto explained a number of factors to improve Jakarta's air quality. One of them is because it has entered the rainy season.

"When it rains, one of the sources of pollution, for example motorbikes, is reduced. They don't work," Guswanto told reporters, Thursday, December 5.

In addition to declining sources of pollution, the intensity of the rain that is increasingly occurring is a factor for washing the air to be clean. All particles and gas will overflow into the earth with rainwater.

Then, the current movement of the wind can also dilute the confinement of air concentration due to pollution, both particulates and gas.

Meanwhile, Deputy Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Sarjoko, explained that in the last two weeks, the value of PM 2.5 air particles was below the ambient air quality (BMUA) standard.

"The concentration of PM2.5 under BMUA during that period can be caused by seasonal conditions that begin to enter the rainy season," explained Sarjoko.

According to Sarjoko, the measured rainfall is quite high, especially around Jagakarsa and Lubang Buaya. Where, in the last few days, accompanied by an increase in wind speed in several areas that play a role in the pollutant deposition process.

"From the results of measurements of rainfall and wind speed over the past 2 weeks, this has increased significantly, thus helping to dilute pollutants, especially particulates," he added.
