JAKARTA - Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Minister (P2MI), Abdul Kadir Karding said, approximately one million job opportunities abroad are open to Indonesian citizens.

This was conveyed by Karding during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding and Joint Circular (SEB) of 4 Ministers concerning Strengthening the Governance for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers at the Office of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri), Jakarta, Tuesday, December 3.

"The existing data, (received) 1 million requests (PMI) from more than 100 countries," said Minister Karding.

The activity was attended by Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions (Mendes PDT), Yandri Susanto Minister of Manpower (Menaker), Yassierli.

Unfortunately, said Karding, Indonesia has not been able to meet the request properly. He said that every year only about 200 thousand PMIs are sent abroad.

"We have only met 200 thousand, almost 300 thousand (PMI), even then 60 percent of which are domestic workers, informal workers," said Minister Karding.

Menurut Menteri Karding, perlu kerja sama antara pemerintah pusat, pemerintah daerah, hingga pemerintah desa untuk memenuhi permintaan itu. Terutama sinergi dalam meningkatkan kesampil dan bahasa bagi calon PMI.

So that they avoid the threat of exploitation and the state is present to provide protection, thereby reducing the unemployment rate.

"So actually, if we, the Minister of Manpower, if you want to unravel, reduce unemployment, we must work together to which (residents) we must send abroad, which one should be here (domestic)," explained Minister Karding.

"If we can increase it a little by boosting the training, we increase the skills and language a little, I'm sure they will go home (to Indonesia) with technology, technology transfer," continued Minister Karding.

In addition, Minister Karding also appreciated the signing of a memorandum of understanding regarding strengthening the governance of PMI placement and protection carried out by KP2MI, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Manpower, and the Ministry of Villages PDT. According to him, the involvement of all stakeholders is needed to ensure protection for PMI.

"We agree that local governments, village governments will be involved, both from the Perkada side, regional head regulations, Perdes (village regulations), even budgets to help socialize, then education and training, repatriation and departure (PMI), and other forms of protection. So this is extraordinary, one extraordinary progress," said Minister Karding.
