Foreign Minister: Many Things BRICS Struggles In Line With Indonesia

JAKARTA - Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Sugiono said that there were many things that BRICS was fighting for in line with what Indonesia was fighting for.

Hal tersebut, kata dia, sebagaimana yang ditemukannya saat menghadiri Konferensi Tinggi (KTT) BRICS Plus di Kazan, Rusia, akhir Oktober lalu.

"We see that during the summit, what is actually being fought for at BRICS is in line with what we are fighting for," said Sugiono during a working meeting with Commission I of the DPR as reported by ANTARA, Monday, December 2.

In addition to a more inclusive multilateral system, he said that BRICS often voiced issues that were often voiced by Indonesia in the international world, for example regarding Palestinian independence.

The Foreign Minister assessed that BRICS is a medium that Indonesia will be able to use as the right vehicle in discussing and advancing the interests of developing countries.

"This is also an implementation of our independent and active foreign policy," he said.

However, Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia's entry into BRICS cannot be interpreted as favoring Indonesia against one particular force or block.

"But it's more about being a bridge builder, being a party that can actually be a mediator if there are opposing interests," he said.

On the other hand, the Foreign Minister did not deny any input to review Indonesia's intention to become a member of BRICS.

However, the Foreign Minister emphasized that Indonesia remains in a position to join BRICS because it has the freedom as a sovereign country to determine who is working with for the sake of the Indonesian national interest.

"We are still (will join). Not yet, there has been no change. Once again, if for example it is something that threatens the national interest, we could see again what it looks like," said Sugiono.
