JAKARTA - Thousands of protesters clashed in the capital Tbilisi. They used automatic fireworks to the police, which the water cannon and tear gas responded to.

"I am here for a very simple reason, to defend my future in Europe and the democracy of my country," said one of the protesters, Nikoloz Miruashvili.

Some protesters remained outside all night, but the police finally ended the deadlock by removing them from the parliament building.

Georgia's interior ministry said 21 police officers were injured in protests overnight, and 113 people have been injured since the start of the current riots.

Several protesters have also been injured in recent days, and the United States condemns what it calls excessive use of police force.

The Georgian Ombudsman said 124 of the 156 people arrested in the demonstration had complained police used violence against them, calling it a "very disturbing figure".

Zurab Japaridze, leader of the opposition coalition movement for Change, was briefly detained by police but then released

Hundreds of diplomats and civil servants have signed an open letter protesting the decision to postpone talks with the EU and stop receiving any funds from the bloc for four years. At least four Georgian ambassadors have resigned.

Ilia Topuria, a martial arts fighter with many followers in the country, wrote in an Instagram post: "I am against the decision to stop negotiating our access to the European Union. I am ashamed to see how Georgian children are treated".

Zourabichvili said he would not step down as president when his term ends this month as parliament will elect his successor to be elected in the October elections which the opposition says has been rigged.

The election commission said the vote was fair. Prime Minister Kobakhidze on Sunday said Zourabichvili reacted emotionally to the opposition's defeat in elections and had to leave the presidential palace by the end of this month.
