BPOM Finds 55 Dangerous Cosmetic Products Sold In Online And Offline Stores

JAKARTA - The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) found dangerous cosmetic products circulating in online shops and sales after conducting testing sampling at the BPOM RI Office, Jalan Percetakan Negara, Central Jakarta, Thursday, November 28.

Head of BPOM, Taruna Ikrar emphasized that 55 cosmetic products were found to contain prohibited materials or hazardous materials.

"The findings consist of 35 cosmetic products made based on production contracts, 6 cosmetic products produced and circulated by the cosmetics industry, and 14 imported cosmetic products," Taruna Ikrar told reporters, Thursday, November 28.

According to him, cosmetics is a pharmaceutical preparation that has a risk to health if it does not meet the requirements of safety, benefits, and quality.

"The cosmetic products produced by sampling and testing were found to be positive for containing prohibited ingredients or harmful ingredients for mercury, retinoate acid, hydrokinons, K3 red dyes, K10 red dyes, orange 7 acid dyes, and lead," he said.

The use of cosmetics that contain prohibited ingredients or harmful materials can pose a health risk for consumers.

Taruna Ikrar further explained that mercury can result in changes in skin tone in the form of black spots (chronosis), allergies, skin irritation, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, and kidney damage.

While retinoic acid can cause dry skin, burning taste, and changes in the shape or function of the fetal organ (thermogenic nature). Hydrokinons have the potential to cause hyperpigmentation, cause chromosis, as well as changes in the color of the cornea and the nails.

Then dyes are prohibited (red K3, red K10, and acid orange 7) are carcinogenic or cause cancer and can interfere with liver function.

"The existence of lead in cosmetics can damage the function of the organs and body system," he said.

Violators of violations will be subject to provisions of Article 435 jo. Article 138 paragraph (2) of Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health with a maximum imprisonment of 12 years or a maximum fine of 5 billion rupiah.

BPOM also appealed to business actors to run their business in accordance with the provisions of the applicable laws and regulations.

"I emphasize to business actors who produce, import, and distribute cosmetics containing prohibited materials or hazardous materials so that they immediately withdraw products from circulation and destroyed. The results of this product must be reported by business actors to BPOM," he said.
