JAKARTA - The British government has expressed its support for Indonesia's request to join the Organization for Economic and Development Cooperation (OECD).
The joint statement of the two countries published by the British government through the gov.uk page emphasized that the UK will provide a technical support package to assist Indonesia in carrying out the reforms needed to meet the full membership requirements of OECD.
"The UK welcomes Indonesia's request to join the OECD and will provide a technical support package to assist Indonesia in carrying out the reforms needed to meet membership requirements," reads the joint statement of the two countries reported by ANTARA, Thursday, November 21.
In addition, the UK noted that Indonesia had also submitted an application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
CPTPP is a free trade agreement involving 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, namely Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam.
Britain joined CPTPP on July 16, 2021, after signing the UK Accession Protocol.
"The UK noted that Indonesia has also submitted an application to join CPTPP, look at the benefits of this dynamic trade group and expressed its willingness to share its experiences in the accession process," he said.
Reporting from the OECD National Team website, the Indonesian Government has started the accession process to become an OECD member after its application was received on February 20, 2024.
The OECD board approved an accession roadmap on March 29, 2024, covering stages, requirements, and in-depth evaluation of Indonesia's policies and regulations to adjust to OECD standards.
This process begins with the preparation of an Initial Memorandum by Indonesia, which is then evaluated by the OECD Secretariat and related technical committees. Adjustments to Indonesian regulations are needed to achieve the best practices of OECD, which can encourage policy reform.

After the technical evaluation, the OECD Council will make final decisions and official invitations for Indonesia to become members. Indonesia hopes that this process will be completed in 2027, and will make Indonesia a full member after the ratification of the accession agreement.
The joint Indonesia-England statement was published moments after President Prabowo Subianto made an official visit to the UK today.
"The British Prime Minister and President of the Republic of Indonesia, celebrate the 75th anniversary of our bilateral relations. We agreed to strengthen and revitalize our relationship through a new and more in-depth Strategic Partnership for the coming years," the UK said in a statement.
