Residents Are Expected To Be Aware Of The Fall Of Mount Karangetang-Sulut Lava

JAKARTA - The Geological Agency recommends residents to be aware of avalanches of lava and hot clouds avalanches that can occur at any time from the buildup of Mount Karangetang lava material, on Siau Island, Sitaro Islands Regency, North Sulawesi.

It was stated in a report made by Vieko Kristianse Rompas, AMd on magma.esdm.go.id, PVMBG, Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, reported by Antara, Sunday 17 November, that the lava condition was unstable and easily collapsed, especially to the south, southeast, west and southwest sectors.

Other recommendations, the community and visitors / tourists should not approach, do not climb and do not move in the hazard forecast zone, namely a radius of 2.5 kilometers from the crater peak of two (northern areas) and the main crater (south) as well as sectoral expansion areas to the west, southwest, southeast, and south as far as 3.5 kilometers.

People living around the banks of rivers that originate from the peak of Mount Karangetang to increase preparedness from the potential threat of rain lava and flash floods that can flow to the coast.

Previously, the evaluation of Mount Karangetang's volcanic activity was raised from level two to alert level three starting November 11, 2024 at 13.00 WITA.

In the observation period Saturday, November 16, 2024, 11 gust earthquakes were recorded with an amplitude of 4-15 millimeters, and an earthquake of 17-30 seconds.

One hybrid/many-phase earthquake with an amplitude of five millimeters, the S-P was not observed and the earthquake lasted 12 seconds.

30 shallow volcanic earthquakes were also recorded with an amplitude of 3-10 millimeters, and an earthquake of 5-10 seconds.

26 times of deep volcanic earthquakes with an amplitude of 5-50 mm, an S-P of 0.5-1 seconds and an earthquake of 7-15 seconds. As well as 10 times a distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 7-30 millimeters, an S-P of 11-25 seconds and an earthquake of 31-126 seconds.

Mount Karangetang erupted on February 8, 2023, so that at 16.00 WITA, the level of activity was raised from level II alert to level III alert, the status then dropped to alert level II on April 26, 2023 at 16.00 WITA.

Activities rose again to level III on May 19, 2023, and their status was lowered again to level II on November 29, 2023 at 16.00 WITA.
