JAKARTA - President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday evening power and diplomacy must work together to end Russia's war in Ukraine, ensuring that such conflict does not happen again in the future.

"We understand very clearly that diplomacy has no prospects without power," President Zelensky said in a late-night video address.

"However, without a clear understanding of diplomatic goals, weapons alone will not work. That is why strength and diplomacy must go hand in hand," he continued.

"This is the only way to secure lasting peace and to prevent a repeat of the war Moscow is doing against Kyiv," he added.

President Zelensky, who relentlessly called for an "fair" end to the war, has lobbied the United States and NATO allies to arm Kyiv, helping to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to make peace, saying Ukraine is only open to "honest" diplomacy.

Ukraine has also pleaded with its allies to allow Kyiv to use Western long-range weapons to strike deep into Russian territory and damage Moscow's war infrastructure.

President Zelensky's call on Sunday to strengthen diplomatic efforts comes after former Republican President Donald Trump defeated pro-Ukraine Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, in the United States presidential election.

During his election campaign, Trump has repeatedly said he can end the war in Ukraine "in a day," but has never said how.
