Coordinating Minister For Law And Human Rights Yusril Calls The 1998 Tragedy Not A Serious Violation Of Human Rights

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the riots and violence that occurred in 1998 were not gross human rights violations.

This was conveyed by Yusril when asked about the problem of gross human rights violations which became homework even in the era of President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) administration. He initially said that most of these violations of this category occurred during colonialism.

"Heavi human rights violations are genocide, ethnic cleansing has not occurred in recent decades, it may have happened during the colonial period, yes, at the beginning of our role in independence in the 1960s," Yusril told reporters at the State Palace, Jakarta, Monday, October 21.

Meanwhile, in the current period, Yusril said there had been no gross human rights violations. Including, when asked his opinion regarding the 1998 riots.

The team was formed based on Presidential Decree Number 17 of 2022 sourced from public discussions and juridical and political issues that accompanied the debate over the resolution of past gross human rights violations. Its members are Prof. Makarim Wibisono, Ifdal Kasim, Prof. Suparman Marzuki, Dr. Mustafa Abubakar, Prof. Rahayu, KH As'ad Said Ali, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Kiki Syahnakri, and Prof. Komarudin Hidayat.
