Bali Police Arrest Dozens Of Perpetrators Of Personal Data Theft To Illegal Initial Card Business

JAKARTA - The Directorate of Cyber Investigation of the Bali Regional Police revealed 12 perpetrators of criminal acts of personal data theft in the form of illegal sim card registration and the sale of the One Time Password (OTP) code.

The Head of Public Relations of the Bali Police, Kombes Jansen Avitus Panjaitan, said that the disclosure of this case was the first time using the Personal Data Protection Law at the Bali Police.

"The modus operandi is to use other people's personal data to register an initial card to obtain the OTP code and then sell it to the buyer," said Jansen, Wednesday, October 16.

The perpetrators arrested by the police have different duties in carrying out these crimes, namely DBS (owner), GVS (manager), MAM (head of sort), FM as head of Simcard registration production.

YOB Simcard registration officer, TP card registration officer, ARP (card registration officer) IKABM (registration officer), RDSS as the perpetrator of selling Simcard to consumers.

DP as a research developer, IWSW as a customer service, and DJS as a promotion (sales).

The suspects were charged with Article 65 paragraph (3), Article 67 paragraph (3) of Law Number 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection. In addition, the suspects were charged with the ITE Law, namely Article 32 paragraph (1), Article 48 paragraph (1).

Meanwhile, the Director of Cyber Investigation at the Bali Police, AKBP Ranefli Dian Candra, said that the crime was revealed starting with information from the public received by the Bali Police Cyber Team on October 9, 2024, which suspected a location suspected of being an online gambling spot.

"After we arrived, it turned out that it was not an online gambling spot but an illegal production of SIM card registration," said the former Bali Police Chief of Criminal Investigation.

Ranefli explained that there are two places suspected of being the headquarters for the theft of data in the city of Denpasar, namely the first TKP on Sakura Gang 1 Street No.18C Denpasar and on Jalan Gatot Subroto I, Park Tegeh Sari Housing No.17 Denpasar.

During the raid at the first crime scene, officers found a modem and laptop that were allegedly used to register/register the first card using the identity of another person illegally.

After further investigation, the Ditressiber Team investigated the crime scene, then found a laptop modem and an initial card that had been registered using the identity of another person illegally and several boxes containing an unopened first card.
