YOGYAKARTA - Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro was included in 49 figures invited by the elected President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, to visit his residence on Monday (14/10). The name Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro is also included in the list of ministerial candidates in the cabinet of the new government of President-elect Prabowo-Gibran.

Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro is widely known as an academic and practitioner in the field of mechanical engineering and education management. However, there is no certainty about the position that will be given to Satryo in the Prabowo-Gibran Cabinet.

Currently, Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro serves as Chair of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI) for the 2018-2023 period and is a member of the Commission for Engineering Sciences. So what is the figure of Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro from his track record and contribution in the world of education like?

Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro was born in Delft, Netherlands, on January 5, 1956. He currently serves as Chairman and Member of the Commission on Engineering at the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI) for the 2018-2023 period.

Satryo has extensive experience in higher education, including in the implementation of various reforms to improve the quality of education so that it can compete at the international level. Currently, Satryo is active as a guest lecturer in mechanical engineering at the Toyoashi University of Technology, Japan, as well as at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

Satryo's name is well known in the ITB environment, where he has produced more than 99 scientific publications. He became part of the institution after completing a study in engineering and earning a Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley, United States, in 1985.

In 1992, Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro was appointed as Chair of the ITB Technical Engineering Department. In this role, he introduced the independent evaluation process in his major which was later adopted by ITB and the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia as a step to improve the quality of education.

Under his leadership, higher education reforms in Indonesia began in December 2000, when a number of major universities were converted into State-Owned Law Entities (BHMN). This policy is designed to provide greater autonomy in the management of educational institutions.

In addition, Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro also collaborated with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in planning the construction of the engineering faculty building of Hasanuddin University in Gowa.

As Director General of Higher Education (Dirjen Dikti), Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro made a significant contribution in the development of education in Indonesia. Focus on improving the quality of university graduates to be more able to compete in the world of work.
