Prevent Radical Understanding, BNPT Forms For Coordination Of Terrorism Prevention Forums In Southwest Papua

JAKARTA - The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) formed a Coordination Forum for the Prevention of Terrorism (FKTP) in Southwest Papua as an effort to counter radicalism and terrorism in the 38th province.

Director of Prevention of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), Prof. Irfan Idris said that radicalism and terrorism are easy to spread among the community which has an impact on community harmony.

"The understanding of terrorism and radicalism is present in the midst of a society that is not mature in studying religious science, so it is with this half-understanding that it creates a suspicious attitude, does not respect each other, or hate which will lead to the emergence of fatal actions that harm others," said Irfan Idris quoting Antara.

Stamping terrorism or radicalism is not only to one particular religion or ethnicity, but can happen to any circle.

"Because it happens that in Indonesia we are Muslim more and several incidents are also carried out by unscrupulous persons, the tendency is like that. If in other countries the perpetrators are in accordance with the majority there, such as in India, in America, then the picture is like that," he said.

The importance of establishing FKTP as a forum that will play a role in countering radicalism and terrorism so that it does not spread widely in the province of Southwest Papua.

BNPT held a pre-reviewed meeting on the establishment of FKTP in Sorong City, Southwest Papua on September 24-27, 2024, in collaboration with local governments and all community leaders.

Head of the Southwest Papua Kesbagpol Agency, Sellvyana Sangkek, appreciated BNPT's steps by holding a preview of the formation of FKPT in Southwest Papua.

FKPT institutions are here to prevent and educate residents, especially the younger generation, so that they are not easily exposed to radicalism or terrorists.

"We hope that the FKPT that was formed will provide a more important role to the community," he said.
