JAKARTA - Greek authorities are investigating the death of a 37-year-old Pakistani migrant while being held at a police station in downtown Athens.

Muhammad Kamran Ashiq's body was found on September 21 by the police on duty at the office.

Police said Ashiq was detained on September 18 for resisting arrest after alleged harassment.

They said Ashiq, who was injured, was also sentenced to several months in prison for resisting arrest and causing damage to foreign property.

He was detained at the police station awaiting his transfer to prison and transferred to another detention area, where there were no surveillance cameras, after a fight with other detainees, police said.

Ashiq's family lawyer, Maria Sfetsou, gave a different arrest date. He said Ashiq, who has a residence permit and works as a shipping driver, was first detained on September 13, and was transferred to various prisons without being able to contact his relatives.

"When he was bruised was when he was detained," Sfetsou said.

The initial investigation was carried out by the police department where Ashiq's body was found.

The Greek Ombudsman will investigate the actions of police officers involved in the incident.
