Hungary Affirms EU Sanctions To Russia Failed To Achieve Goals To Resolve War In Ukraine

JAKARTA - Hungarian senior diplomat Peter Szijjarto said EU sanctions against Russia had failed to achieve its goal of stopping the conflict in Ukraine.

"Well, our position is very clear in terms of sanctions. We consider the EU sanction policy a total failure," he told Tass on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, quoted Friday, September 27.

More than that, sanctions for restrictions or export bans, bookkeeping of foreign assets and currency reserves do not weaken Russia.

Szijjarto said EU sanctions against Russia actually caused more damage to the economies of European countries.

"Obviously we suffer from skyrocketing inflation. We suffer a rapidly rising energy price. Both are consequences of the sanctions regime," he said.

In addition, Szijjarto revealed that major countries and companies in the West avoid sanctions against Russia that they have announced.

"So it's hypocritical, unreasonable, and has failed. That's my brief opinion on sanctions policy," he concluded.
