JAKARTA - North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat) officers extinguished a 1 hectare land fire on Tidung Island, Thousand Islands.

"This land fire is thought to have occurred due to cigarette butts that were still burning and the fire spread," said Head of North Jakarta Gulkarmat and Thousand Islands Gatot Sulaeman, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, September 26.

He said the object that caught fire was an alang-alang forest located next to the MTSN 26 school on Tidung Island, Jalan Kampung Baru, Tidung Island, South Thousand Islands District.

The witness first saw thick smoke from the minang-alang forest and immediately contacted Gulkarmat officers.

"We received information about the fire at 18.00 WIB and immediately sent a unit of two pump units," he said.

There were six Gulkarmat personnel who struggled to extinguish the fire and managed to extinguish it at around 19:45 WIB.

"We urge the public to be more vigilant and careful with things that have the potential to cause fires such as throwing cigarette butts carelessly, burning garbage and others," he said.
