JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi handed over the Instrument for the Ratification of the Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Contract (TPNW) to the Secretariat General of the United Nations (UN) at the Treaty Event event in New York, United States on Tuesday.

"The handover of this instrument confirms Indonesia's active role in maintaining international peace and security through the denomination of weapons," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an upload on its website, Wednesday, September 25.

With the submission of this Ratification Instrument, Indonesia has officially become a party country to TPNW.

"In the future, Indonesia will continue to encourage the universalization of TPNW, with the aim that more countries sign and ratify this treaty," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

By adopting TPNW, Indonesia has also established international norms that oppose nuclear weapons from a humanitarian perspective, providing moral and political pressure to nuclear weapons-owning countries to stop their development.

This step reflects Indonesia's moral commitment to humanity and peace, as well as sets an example for other countries to participate in building a safer world

Indonesia will continue to play its role in encouraging the universalization of TPNW in the hope that more countries will join, the less the risk of using nuclear weapons, as well as strengthening efforts to eliminate and non-proliferate nuclear weapons at the global level.

It is known that the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty (Treaty on the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons/TPNW) was first adopted on July 7, 2017 and aims to regulate the ban on nuclear weapons as a whole.

Currently, there are around 70 countries that have become state parties and 93 signatories TPNW countries.

Previously, the DPR RI Plenary Meeting on November 21, 2023, ratified the Draft Law (RUU) on Ratification of TPNW into Law Number 22 of 2023 which will take effect on December 20, 2023.
