JAKARTA - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is "very concerned" over reports of a full-scale attack in the town of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, by the Rapid Supporting Forces (RSF).
United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Guterres asked Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan 'Hemedti' Dagalo to act responsibly and immediately order the cessation of the RSF attack.
"It is unacceptable that the war parties continue to ignore calls to stop hostilities. Any further escalation will also threaten to spread conflict along inter-community lines throughout Darfur," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, September 22.
Stressing that a ceasefire is not only necessary, but also an urgent must "both in El Fasher and in all other conflict zones in Sudan, the spokesman said that the humanitarian situation in the area was "already a disaster" with hundreds of thousands of people in dire need of help.

Stressing that the parties in the conflict have "clear obligation" under international humanitarian law to protect civilians, Dujarric stated, attacks should not be directed at them or civil infrastructure, and continuous attention must be given to protect citizens.
He continued, Guterres reminded the special envoy, Ramtane Lamamra, to continue to make efforts to promote peace and added that the head of the United Nations is ready to support "to stop violence and move towards peace."
"Humanitarian organizations are also ready to immediately increase aid in El Fasher and other areas in need across Sudan," he added.
