4.9 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Most Of Bali Island

DENPASAR - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 shocked most areas in Bali Province, this Saturday.

"The earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to active fault activity on land," said Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region III Cahyo Nugroho in Denpasar, quoted from ANTARA, Saturday, September 7.

Based on BMKG Region III Denpasar data, shallow earthquake tremors occurred at around 09.51 WITA with the point of the earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.52 degrees South Latitude (LS) and 115.35 degrees East Longitude (BT), or precisely located on land at a distance of two kilometers northeast of Gianyar Regency, Bali.

Cahyo added that from the results of the analysis of the source mechanism, it showed that the earthquake had a downward movement mechanism or a Normal Fault.

The impact of the earthquake was in the form of shocks felt in the Gianyar area with a Mercalli scale (Modified Mercalli Intensity/MMI), namely a unit to measure the strength of the earthquake, amounting to III-IV MMI. On that scale the vibration was felt real in the house and the vibration felt as if a truck had passed.

As an overview, the III-IV scale was felt by many people in the house and outside by several people, broken pottery, windows/doors rowed, and walls ranged.

Apart from Gianyar, the tectonic earthquake was also felt in Tabanan, Badung, Denpasar City, Klungkung, even to Mataram City, East Lombok, Central Lombok, and West Lombok, NTB with a scale of III MMI.

So far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake.

The Provincial Government (Pemprov) of Bali is currently recording the impact of the earthquake shock.

Cahyo added that the results of tsunami modeling with tectonic earthquake sources showed that the earthquake had no potential for a tsunami.
