JAKARTA - Economist and politician Faisal Basri died at the age of 65, Thursday, September 5 at 03.50 WIB at Mayapada Hospital, Kuningan, Jakarta. Faisal Basri became one of the founders of PAN and lost to Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in the 2012 Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Faisal Basri became one of the founders of the People's Trustees Council (Mara) which is the forerunner of the National Mandate Party (PAN) and several non-profit organizations, such as the National Harkat Foundation, Global Rescue Network, and the Indonesian Brightening Foundation.

Since 2000, Faisal has also been appointed as a member of the Business Competition Supervision Commission (KPPU).

In 2012, Faisal Basri took Biem Benjamin, the son of legendary Betawi character Benyamin Sueb to run for governor of Jakarta from an independent path, but he failed to win the DKI Jakarta gubernatorial election with fewer votes than Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Fauzi Bowo, and Hidayat Nur Wahid.

Meanwhile, the 10th and 12th Indonesian Vice Presidents, Jusuf Kalla, said that the government needed a figure like Senior Economist Faisal Basri who was brave and an expert in processing data and was very understanding in the economic sector.

"Yes, of course, in any government, in any country, there needs to be a person who reminds and is brave but must also be scientifically based, consistent with data. Not much can be like that, that's Mr. Faisal Basri, we lost it," he said at the funeral home, Thursday, September 5.

Jusuf Kalla assessed that Faisal was a critical person and if there was an inappropriate government step in making policies, the deceased would loudly criticize the policy.

"We all know, Pak Faisal is a smart, intellectual person in the economic field and brave. Many people are smart but don't dare. Many people are brave but not smart," he added.
