The 79th Anniversary Of The DPR, Puan Maharani, Emphasizes Indigenous Democracy

JAKARTA - In commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of the Indonesian House of Representatives on August 29, 2024, the Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, emphasized the importance of implementing civilized democracy in accordance with the constitution and people's rights. In her speech at the Plenary Meeting of the Nusantara II Building, Puan underlined that since the beginning Indonesia's independence had chosen a democratic government system with sovereignty in the hands of the people and equality in the eyes of the law.

"Democracy practices have developed from one regime to the next and are further strengthened after reform," said Puan. He added that constitutional amendments emphasize the government's obligation to fulfill the rights of the people, including the right to life, the right to marriage, and the right to develop themselves. These rights must be fulfilled by the executive, legislative and judicial branches according to their respective functions," said Puan in a written statement received by VOI.

Puan also highlighted the institutional transformation of the DPR to adapt to political and social dynamics. "This is an effort to build a civilized democracy based on Pancasila," he explained. He reminded that the DPR must face challenges every period with responses according to its authority, and fulfill people's expectations to improve welfare.

In the DPR RI's performance report during the 2023-2024 session, Puan said the theme 'DPR Strengthens Unity and Mutual Cooperation Towards Prosperous Indonesia'. Important achievements include monitoring the implementation of the 2024 General Election. The 2024 election has gone well with the election of the President, Vice President, Members of the DPR, DPRD, and DPD," said Puan Maharani.

He also discussed the high cost of building political institutions and appealed to members of the DPR to have integrity and be enthusiastic about mutual cooperation. "Happy 79th Birthday of the DPR RI," concluded Puan Maharani.

The event was attended by former leaders of the DPR, Chairman of the DPD RI, leaders of state institutions, and representatives of the government, and ended with a procession of cutting the cone.
