Australia Restricts Foreign Student Registration To 270,000 People By 2025

JAKARTA - The Australian government announced its plan to limit the number of international student registrations to 270,000 by 2025.

Education Minister Jason Clare said the government had announced in May that it would set limits on the number of international students acceptable to international education providers.

"Depending on the ratification of laws by parliament, the government will limit the number of international students to 270,000 by 2025," said Clare.

According to the minister, the number of international students at a number of Australian universities has increased by 10 percent compared to the number of international students before the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Now the students are back. Currently there are about 10 percent more international students at our university than before the pandemic and about 50 percent more in our private vocational education and training providers," Clare told reporters, as quoted by Anadolu from SBS News as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, August 28.

The education sector is one of the sectors that is profitable for Australia because the university earned around $8.6 billion (USD 5.8 billion or around 89.8 trillion) from international students in 2022.

However, the surge in house rental prices appears to force the government to control the number of foreign students entering Australia, according to reports.

Education service providers have expressed concern that the restrictions will cause job loss and revenue, SBS News reports.
