JAKARTA - Russia evacuated civilians from the second region after Ukraine after Kyiv stepped up military activity near the Kursk border.

Ukrainian troops stormed the Russian border on Tuesday last week and attacked several parts of the western part of the Kursk region in Russia.

"I'm sure our soldiers will do everything they can to overcome the threats that arise," said local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

"We are starting to move people living in the Krasnaya Yaruga district to a safer place," he added.

Russia has imposed strict security in the Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod regions. Meanwhile, its Belarus allies said it increased its troop numbers at its border after Minsk said Ukraine had violated its airspace by drone.

Russian officials say Ukraine's attack on Russian sovereign territory aims to show Western supporters that Kyiv can still deploy massive military operations while trying to get a bargaining position ahead of possible ceasefire negotiations.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 in what the Kremlin calls a "special military operation" and now controls 18 percent of Ukraine.
