Trump Calls Ukrainian President, Promises To Be 'A Peacemaker' To End War

JAKARTA - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump communicated with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Trump promised to end the Kyiv war with Russia through negotiations.

Zelenskiy also reported on his conversation with Trump and expressed his gratitude for the US military assistance. But he did not mention in a post on social media platform X about efforts to end the 28-month conflict.

Trump said he would end the war in Ukraine even before he took office in January 2025 if he won the election on November 5, 2024.

Trump also said if he took office when the Kremlin sent troops to Ukraine in February 2022, war would never have happened.

In a post via Truth Social, Trump said as president he "will bring peace to the world and end a war that has claimed many lives."

"Both sides will be able to unite and negotiate agreements that end violence and pave the way for prosperity," Trump said.

Although Trump has made few concrete policy proposals, he told Reuters in an interview last year that Ukraine may have to hand over some of its territory to reach a peace agreement.

In his post, Zelenskiy said he congratulated Trump for being a Republican candidate and condemned the assassination attempt against him last week.

"I wish him absolute strength and safety in the future," Zelenskiy said.

"I note the support of bipartisan and bicameral America which is important to protect the freedom and independence of our nation," he continued.

Ukraine, Zelenskiy emphasized, will always thank the United States for its assistance in strengthening its ability to fight Russia's terror.

Zelenskiy rejected any negotiations with Russia to end the conflict as long as Russian troops remain in Ukraine.
