Semarang - Semarang Police, Central Java, arrested five suspected perpetrators of the beating of a young cell phone thief (ponsel) in Semarang City, Central Java, to death. Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of Semarang Polrestabes Kompol Andika Dharma Sena said the five perpetrators and victims, Agusti Edo Setiawan (22), a resident of Tembalang, Semarang City, had known each other before. The five suspects arrested were TAB (28), GPT (23), AS (24), and WK (34) residents of Semarang City, and MNK (18) residents of Batang Regency. According to him, the incident began when the victim and several suspects consumed alcoholic beverages at a cooperative office in the Pedurungan area, Semarang City, on July 6, 2024. "After drinking, it turned out that there was a cell phone belonging to one of the perpetrators who was missing," he said in Semarang, Antara, Friday, July 12. When searched, he continued, the perpetrators admitted that the missing cell phone was on the victim's body. The perpetrators abused the victim in two different locations. After being mistreated, the victim was then sent home injured. The victim's family took the victim to a health clinic for treatment, but was refused due to his condition which had to be referred to the hospital. The victim was reported dead on July 9, 2024. "From the autopsy results, the victim was declared dead due to bleeding in the brain," he said.

For their actions, the suspects were charged with Article 170 of the Criminal Code regarding beatings that killed someone.
