JAKARTA - Taiwanese prosecutors are investigating Cheng Wen-tsan, a senior official and member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) who is dealing with China over alleged bribery.

Cheng Wen-tsan is the head of the Straits Exchange Foundation under China's Mainland Affairs Board of policymakers who deal with daily issues such as accidents involving Taiwanese in China. The foundation is technically private because governments in Beijing and Taipei do not recognize or have official relationships.

Prosecutors in the northern Taiwan city of Taoyuan, where Cheng was mayor from 2014-2022, said he had been summoned for questioning on Friday, July 5 on suspicion of bribery and that they had filed a request to the court to detain him.

The statement did not provide details regarding the charges against him.

Cheng, in a statement issued through his lawyer and released by the foundation, denied wrongdoing.

"I did not commit any illegal acts, and I will cooperate in a judicial investigation. I look forward to clarifying the truth and proving that I am innocent as soon as possible," he said.

Taiwan's presidential office said it respects the judiciary and hopes investigators will clarify this matter as soon as possible.
