JAKARTA - The phenomenon of increasing air temperature in urban areas compared to rural areas or urban heat island (UHI) hitting tourism centers on the island of Bali.

"It happened in tourism centers, because the carbon emissions were high and the heat was also high," said Udayana University Faculty of Tourism Lecturer I Nyoman Sunarta in a workshop entitled Blue Citizenship, reported by Antara, Tuesday, June 25.

The phenomenon of heat island which is evident to occur in Denpasar. This area has faster development growth than other areas in Bali.

In addition, Canggu Village, which is located in Badung Regency, also experiences a similar phenomenon due to traffic jams occurring every day.

Carbon emissions and high land density were built causing the sun's heat to be stored for a long time and trapped on the earth's surface, causing tourism centers to have warmer temperatures.

Research conducted from 2001 to 2019 revealed that the increase in temperature in tourism and urban areas was 0.1 degrees Celsius, while in rural areas it was only 0.06 degrees Celsius every year.

"Local knowledge must be considered there," said Sunarta.

He conveyed that local knowledge is very important as a form of adaptation to environmental changes that are now happening in Bali.

Local knowledge offers holistic and integrated solutions for the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystems, as it combines ecological, social, and cultural aspects in one unit.

"If Bali wants to be safe, we need to return to nature, tradition and culture," said Sunarta.
