JAKARTA - The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) on Thursday said more than 16,000 Palestinian refugees lived in dire conditions at their school in the city of Deir al-Balah, central Gaza.

The agency shared a picture of the school with X.

"Some families live in classes, corridors, and temporary shelters made of plastic," the agency said as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, May 31.

UNRWA describes the condition of life in the school as very poor with scarce resources, inadequate sanitation facilities, and very limited supplies.

The agency also revealed that in the last two days more than 32,000 people had left the city of Rafah in southern Gaza.

"The families seek refuge, but the damage and destruction are the only horizons they have in the Gaza Strip," he added.

"No place is safe from repeated bombings," UNRWA said, highlighting the enormous dangers faced by civilians.

"People are forced to leave everything: they are threatened every day," he added.

The Israeli military began carrying out ground attacks on Rafah on May 6. A total of 1.5 million Palestinian refugees fled there, where UNRWA said more than 800,000 had left the city since the attack began.

Rafah's important border with Egypt has been closed since Israel took control of Gaza's section when it began an invasion of Rafah.

Israel continues its brutal attacks on Gaza following attacks carried out by the Palestinian Hamas group on October 7 last year, despite UN Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire.

More than 36,240 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, mostly women and children, and more than 81,777 others have been injured, according to local health authorities.

Nearly eight months after Israel's war, much of Gaza's territory was destroyed by food blockades, clean water, and crippling medicines.

Israel is accused of committing genocide in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which in its latest decision ordered Israel to immediately stop its operations in Rafah.
