Responding To Russian Threats In Europe, Germany Reportedly Arrange Military Mandatory Rules Over 18 Years Old

JAKARTA - Germany as a member of NATO is reportedly drafting a mandatory military regulation. The regulation is said to bind a German citizen over 18 years of age.

Citing the Mirror, Monday, May 13, this news follows leaked documents showing Germany is drafting plans to reimplement military service in response to threats emerging from Russia in Europe.

This was allegedly after German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the abolition of military service in 2011 was a "mistake" during an audience in the United States last week.

The Sunday Telegraph reports that there are three different approaches that German officials are considering regarding this military service.

One approach involves all men and women, the other is just men, and the third is through a more selective process involving all 18-year-old applicants.

According to reports, the consideration of this issue is because the interest in German military recruitment is decreasing if this is not done.

A recent poll revealed that about half of all German citizens supported the re-implementation of military service. As many as 52 percent of respondents supported when asked in a survey conducted by German news magazine Stern, with 43 percent against it and 5 percent hesitant.

A clear difference can be seen based on the age group, with 59 percent supporting age groups over the 60s, and 59 percent of the age group 18 to 29 years against it.

Meanwhile in the UK, the issue of mandatory military service abolished in the 1960s received many rejections.

A survey conducted by the Mirror in February in the UK showed nearly half of Britons under 45 would refuse military service even if they were convicted.

Only a quarter or 27 percent said they would register for war if military service was reinstated. About 47 percent said they would refuse and take penalties. The rest said they did not know.

There are currently around 85 countries around the world that have imposed mandatory military training, including Turkey, Cyprus, Israel, and Brazil.
