JAKARTA - Indonesia strongly condemns Israel's attack on Rafah City in southern Gaza as the peak of crimes against humanity, urging the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to stop this brutal crime.
"Indonesia strongly condemns Israel's military attack on the city of Rafah in Gaza and its control of the Rafah Border on the Palestinian side," wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on social media X, quoted Thursday, May 8.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a counterterrorism operation in the eastern part of Rafah City, Gaza Strip, on Monday evening local time.
The attack on Rafah has long been planned by Israel to hunt down the remaining battalions of the Hamas militant group which it claims are in the southern city of Gaza.
Before launching the attack, Israel called on civilians in the eastern area of the city to flee to the northern area which Israel claims has been prepared, but international humanitarian agencies call the location uninhabitable.
"Any attempt to forcefully transfer or expel Palestinians, including from Rafah, is unacceptable because this action is the height of crimes against humanity," wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Israel also claims to have taken control of the Rafah area which is the border between Gaza and Egypt.
"Indonesia reiterates its call to immediately realize a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and eliminate all obstacles in the distribution of humanitarian aid," said the ministry.
"The international community, especially the UN Security Council, must immediately stop Israel's brutal crimes and prevent an even greater humanitarian disaster," stressed the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is known that the latest conflict between Hamas and Israel broke out on October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian militant group launched an attack on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people and 252 hostages, according to an Israeli tally.
