KPK Leaders Surrender Setya Novanto And Corruptor Prisoners Get Eid Remission

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Johanis Tanak said that granting remissions, including for convicts of corruption cases, is in the hands of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham). His party could not do anything.

This was conveyed by Johanis in response to the one-month remission of former Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives Setya Novanto who was convicted of a mega-corruption case for the procurement of electronic ID cards or e-KTPs.

"His status has become a convict so legally, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights has the authority to regulate the whereabouts of Setya Novanto in prison, including the right to get remission," Johanis told reporters, Friday, April 12.

Johanis explained that the convicts of corruption cases are entitled to remission or reduction of their term of office in accordance with Article 10 of the Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights (Permenkumham) Number 7 of 2020. As long as they have carried out their obligations, one of them is paying off the fine.

"The convict who commits a criminal act of corruption to get remission must have paid off the fine and replacement money in accordance with the court's decision," he said.

As previously reported, Setya Novanto also received a remission for Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri last year. At that time he received a discount of one month's sentence.

In this case, Setya Novanto was then sentenced to 15 years in prison whose verdict was read out at the Jakarta Corruption Court on April 24, 2018. In addition, he was also required to pay a fine of Rp. 500 million, subsidiary to three months in prison.

Then, Setya Novanto was also required to pay a replacement fee of 7.3 million US dollars. Then, his political rights were revoked for five years after he was released from prison.
