French President Macron In Opposition Pressure Urges To Stop Selling Weapons To Israel

JAKARTA - As many as 115 French lawmakers from the opposition camp have asked President Emmanuel Macron to stop selling weapons to Israel from being "involved in genocide" in the Gaza Strip.

The request was submitted in a joint letter to Macron which was shared on platform X by left-wing lawmaker and party group vice chairman La Franco Insoumise, Mathilde Panot.

"Because France cannot, cannot, and will not violate international law, 115 members of parliament firmly call on the President of the Republic to immediately stop the sale of weapons to Israel," Panot said. The role of France is to promote peace, not to engage in genocide, reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Saturday, April 6.

Even arms sales that are "preferred purely defensive" should be stopped to Tel Aviv, they said in the letter.

"It is important to remember that similar measures have been taken by other countries, such as Canada, the Netherlands and Spain," they said. "It's time for France to rise in

this historic moment.

Israel continues to carry out attacks on the Gaza Strip, where at least 33,091 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and 75,750 people have been injured since October 7, 2023, according to Palestinian health authorities.

Earlier, Palestinian resistance group Hamas broke into the border with Israel, carried out attacks there, and killed about 1,200 people, according to Tel Aviv.

The Israeli war in Gaza has caused 85 percent of the Palestinian enclave population to flee amid worrying conditions due to food, clean water and medicine shortages, while 60 percent of the infrastructure there has been damaged or destroyed, according to the United Nations.
