BMKG Warns Potential For Rob Flood During Eid Holiday 2024

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of the potential for tidal flooding in a number of coastal areas of Indonesia during the 2024 Eid holiday period.

Head of the BMKG Maritime Meteorological Prediction Team Furqon Alfahmi said the areas with the potential for tidal flooding were Belawan coast and its surroundings, Bandar Lampung coast, Tanggamus coast, South Lampung coast.

The tidal flood also threatened the coast of Pesawaran, the coast of Lampung, the coast of West Lampung, the coast of Pandeglang, Lebak Regency, the north coast of Central Java, the coast of Waingapu City, the coast of Kendari City, and the coast of the Kei Islands and Aru Islands.

He said the peak of tidal flooding is predicted to occur on April 9, 2024. This date coincides with the solar eclipse and the phase of the Perigee Moon, where the Moon is at its closest point to Earth, which has the potential to increase sea tides.

According to him, the tidal flood has even occurred in several coastal areas in Indonesia, one of which is Semarang. The tidal flood is predicted to last until April 14, 2024.

BMKG appealed to areas that usually experience tidal flooding to check road conditions. This is to anticipate puddles due to rising sea water.

However, Alfahmi said the frequency of extreme weather in Indonesia is currently decreasing. He also explained that the sea wave height has generally also decreased. The height of the waves above 2 meters, according to him, occurred in the western region of Bengkulu, south of Lampung, and south of Java.

BMKG also predicts that some areas in Indonesia have the potential to experience moderate to heavy rain during the Eid holiday period.

These areas are West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung, West Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Papua.
