JAKARTA - Hundreds of fishermen in Sukabumi Regency, West Java, have not been able to go to sea after the tidal flood that hit the southern coast of Sukabumi Regency some time ago.

According to the Secretary of the Indonesian Fishermen Association (HNSI) of Sukabumi Regency, Sep Radi Priadika in Sukabumi, Sunday, until now hundreds of fishermen have not been able to go to sea because ships or boats to catch their fish have been destroyed by the tidal flood disaster.

"For the time being, fishermen affected by the tidal flood, especially those whose damaged ships have not been able to go to sea," said Sep Radi Priadika, quoted by Antara.

Even though the Sukabumi Regency Government has provided assistance for the daily needs of fishermen affected by the tidal flood, he said, the assistance is not sufficient because their economic activities are disrupted.

In fact, some fishermen choose to change professions, such as being a motorcycle taxi driver, construction worker, sea fish basket, and marine fish retailer. Therefore, he hopes that the help of fishing gear can be realized soon so that fishermen can return to sea.

He has also conducted an analysis and review related to the impact of the tidal flood and recorded damage. In addition, HNSI has also coordinated with other policy makers regarding the steps in the future that must be taken so that fishermen in Sukabumi Regency can return to sea.

"There are currently no arrest gear constraints and so on even though the government has overcome the daily needs of fishermen affected by the tidal flood," he said.

Radi said the tidal flood resulted in hundreds of boats belonging to fishermen on a number of damaged beaches, such as Ujunggenteng Beach, Minajaya, Palabuhanratu,Tegalbuleud, and Cisolok.
