38 Protesters Against Myanmar Military Coup Killed In One Day, UN: Bloodiest Day

JAKARTA - As many as 38 protesters against the Myanamr military coup were killed on Wednesday, February 3 local time, when the Myanmar police and military repressively dispersed protesters while shooting.

"Police and soldiers opened fire with live ammunition with little warning," the witness said.

This incident came just a day after ASEAN countries urged the Myanmar military to restrain its repressive measures against participants in protest against the coup.

“It's terrible, this is a massacre. There are no words to describe our situation and our feelings, ”youth activist Thinzar Shunlei Yi told Reuters via a messaging app.

The death toll from Myanmar's military shot included four children, an aid agency said. Hundreds of protesters were arrested, local media reported.

“Today is the bloodiest day since the coup happened on February 1st. Today, in just one day, 38 people died. We now have more than 50 people killed since the coup started, and many injured, ”said the UN Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener in New York.

According to the plan, the UN, according to diplomats, will discuss this matter in a closed meeting on Friday.

Separately, US State Department Spokesman Ned Price said he was surprised by the continuing increase in violence in the Thousand Pagoda Country. He said President Joe Biden's government was evaluating appropriate steps to respond to this by targeting the Myanmar military.

"We have told China we are waiting for them to play a constructive role in Myanmar," said Price.

Meanwhile, the European Union condemns and calls the shooting of unarmed civilians and medical workers a clear violation of international law.
