JAKARTA - Russia may not need to recognize President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Ukraine's legitimate leader after his term ends on May 21, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"Talking about May 20 and what will happen on May 21, let us live until then first. Maybe at that time, there was no need for any recognition," Lavrov was quoted as saying by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, March 28.

He said this was to respond to a statement by the Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia, who said Zelenskyy's decision not to hold a presidential election would make him illegitimate to lead Ukraine from May 21.

Ukraine's presidential election should be held in the spring of 2024 according to regulations in the country.

However, Ukraine's constitution prohibits elections from being held under martial law, which has been in effect since Russia launched military operations in its neighboring country.

In February, Ukraine's parliament approved an extension of its military emergency status for the next 90 days.
