JAKARTA - Jordan's Foreign Ministry said that Jordan and the United States (US) on Saturday (16/3) discussed efforts to reach a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The discussion was held during a meeting between Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Assistant Secretary of State of the United States for East Affairs near Barbara Leaf in Amman.

"It is necessary to stop the war and the humanitarian disasters it causes and ensure the protection of civilians and the delivery of sufficient and sustainable humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip in a broad, safe and unrestricted manner," said Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi as reported by Anadolu on Sunday.

Israel has launched a deadly military offensive in the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack on October 7 led by Hamas and killed 1,163 people.

Meanwhile, more than 31,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, died in Gaza. Then as many as 73,546 others were injured in mass destruction and lack of basic necessities.

The United Nations noted that the Israeli war had forced 85 percent of Gaza's population to flee amid a blockade that crippled most of the food, clean water and medicines. While as much as 60 percent of the infrastructure in the enclave has been damaged or destroyed.

Israel is accused of committing genocide at the International Court. A temporary decision in January ordered Tel Aviv to ensure its troops did not commit genocide and ensured that humanitarian aid was given to civilians in Gaza.
