Vila In Bali Hit By Landslide, 2 Foreign Tourists Found Dead

DENPASAR - Two foreign tourists, one of whom was a woman from Australia, were found dead on the island of Bali, Indonesia after heavy rains triggered a landslide that swept through the villa building where they were staying, Thursday, February 14.

Official of the local disaster mitigation agency I Nyoman Srinadha Giri said the wooden villa building in Jatiluwih Village was hit by a landslide on Thursday morning, after heavy rains fell the night before.

Heavy rains eroded the waterways used for irrigation above the villa and triggered landslides, killing both.

The victim was evacuated from the rubble in (position) sleep. There are two victims, male and female in one bed," he said.

The female victim, 47 years old, was born in Australia and has a permanent residence permit in the United States, while the nationality and identity of the male victim is still unknown.

The victim's body was rushed to a hospital in the provincial capital, Denpasar.

Landslides in Indonesia are exacerbated by the prolonged deforestation of forests and heavy rains causing flooding in several areas.

Landslides and floods triggered by heavy rains on the island of Sumatra last week killed at least 27 people.
