The Potential For Hydrometeorological Disasters, East Java Provincial Government Ensures Full Preparedness

Based on the release of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the peak of the rainy season is predicted to occur in January-March 2024.

Acting Governor of East Java Adhy Karyono ensured that all regional apparatus within the local provincial government were fully prepared to face potential hydrometeorological disasters.

"The entire disaster preparedness system in East Java is very ready to anticipate the potential for the disaster, both in the form of equipment and personnel," he said in Surabaya, as reported by ANTARA, Monday, March 11.

Meanwhile, responding to BMKG's prediction, according to him, the East Java Provincial Government is in full preparedness.

"All the main elements of the Regional Disaster Management Agency - BPBD -, the Health Service, and the Social Service must respond quickly and take anticipatory steps in times like this," he said.

In early March 2024, hydrometeorological disasters had occurred in several districts/cities in the East Java region. Among other things, floods hit Mojokerto Regency and City, besides that it also caused the embankment to collapse and cut off the bridge.

Then inundation in Probolinggo Regency and City, Madiun Regency, and Magetan. In addition, in Ngawi there was also a flood of river water after heavy rains.

Acting Governor Adhy also ensured that several areas hit by the flood disaster had received treatment.

"Alhamdulillah, according to updates from friends in the field, the current conditions have completely receded and there have been no casualties," he said.

The steps taken by the East Java Provincial Government in responding to and mitigating potential disasters include the integrated early warning system BPBD which was developed and notifications distributed to all modes of communication, such as websites, social media, SMS Blast, and so on.

"We have also strengthened critical embankments, increased the capacity of water pumps and normalized rivers to increase water capacity while launching flows," said Adhy.

According to him, the implementation of these various measures requires active collaboration with all elements of pentahelix, which includes the government, the community, the private sector or the business world, academics, and media groups.
