UK-US Plan To Open Maritime Route Send Aid To Gaza

JAKARTA - Britain will join the US and a number of international partners to open maritime corridors to "send aid directly to Gaza".

"Together with the US, UK, and several partners have announced that we will open maritime corridors to deliver direct aid to Gaza," said British Foreign Minister David Cameron as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, March 8.

He also stressed that the 2 million people in the trapped Palestinian enclave were in "deterrent humanitarian needs".

On Tuesday (5/3), US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US was working to open a maritime corridor to send humanitarian aid to the region.

US President Joe Biden later said they would set up a floating dock off the coast of the enclave.

Italy also said they would join one initiative to create a maritime humanitarian corridor.

"We continue to urge Israel to allow more trucks to enter Gaza as the fastest way to provide assistance to those in need," Cameron added.

UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps also said they were working with allies to open a corridor in an "accelerating" effort to speed up deliveries.

"Our armed forces in this region already support the delivery of aid by land and air and we will continue to do everything we can to provide assistance to those in need," he added on platform X.

Israel launched a deadly attack on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian Hamas group on October 7.

Israel's bombardment has killed more than 30,800 people and injured more than 72,000 others with mass destruction and a shortage of basic necessities.

According to a UN report, the Israeli War has left 85 percent of Gaza's population displaced amid food shortages, clean water and medicines, while 60 percent of infrastructure in the region has been completely damaged or destroyed.

Israel is accused of committing genocide in an International Court (ICJ) session. A provisional decision in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocide and take steps to ensure that humanitarian aid was provided to civilians in Gaza.
