Kapolda Claims Papua's Situation Is Conducive

JAYAPURA - Papua Police Chief Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri stated that the security and public order situation (Kamtibmas) in the Papua Police jurisdiction after the vote was relatively safe.

"Overall, the security situation is relatively safe and conducive even though there are several districts, especially in Papua Mountains and Central Papua Provinces, there have been security disturbances due to inter-supporting conflicts," said Inspector General Fakhiri as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, February 28.

The security disturbance, he said, occurred in areas that used the noken system because it was very vulnerable to the action of contesting ballots.

Admittedly, the noken system that applies in several districts in Papua Mountains and Central Papua Provinces, is one of the causes of security disturbances due to ballots being contested between supporters.

"I hope that in the future the noken system will no longer be used so that people can choose their candidates themselves so that they minimize security disturbances," hoped the Kapolda.

The Papua Police Chief asked prospective legislative members who did not qualify to accept the results gracefully and did not create additional movements that could disrupt security.

Currently, vote calculations are still being carried out at the district level which will continue to districts and provinces.
