Mahfud MD: Artidjo Alkosar Dies Not Because Of COVID-19

JAKARTA - The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD said, Artidjo Alkosar died not because of COVID-19. But because of the disease he had suffered for a long time.

"It is not COVID-19 because the doctor recommends to not going to the hospital," Mahfud told reporters, Sunday, February 28.

So far, from medical records, Artidjo Alkostar does suffer from several diseases. In fact, he had suffered from these diseases for several years.

"His illness has been a while since he had complications of the kidney, heart, and lungs," he said.

Furthermore, Mahfud also said that Artidjo Alkostar's body would be buried in his hometown. Because, this is a decision from the family.

"In accordance with the agreement of the family, he was immediately brought to Situbondo, where previously facilitated by Mr. Firli and Mr. Sarifudin of the Supreme Court, later the family should be ready in Situbondo to receive," he said.

Meanwhile, Artidjo Alkostar died on Sunday, February 28. He breathed his last at 72 years old.

For information, Artidjo Alkostar started his career since he received his bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Law of the Indonesian Islamic University (UII) in 1976.

Since then, he has dedicated himself to be a lecturer at the same university and to be an advocate at the Yogyakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH) from 1976-2000 until he was finally elected as Director of LBH Yogyakarta in 1989.

He also studied at the Law Faculty of Northwestern University Chicago and graduated in 2002. He continued his doctoral studies at Diponegoro University in Semarang and obtained his Doctor of Laws degree in 2007.

During his 14 years as Supreme Court Justice, Artidjo was also elected as Chairman of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court since 2014. Artidjo retired from the Supreme Court on May 22, 2018, and has handled 19,483 cases throughout his career. In December 2019, Artidjo took an oath to become a member of the KPK Supervisory Board.
