BMKG Asks Residents Not To Panic After The Aftershock Of M 5.2 Malacca NTT

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to the public not to panic over aftershocks that occurred after the 5.2 magnitude (M) earthquake in Malacca Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"There were 10 aftershocks, but there was no need to panic, stay calm," said Head of Kupang Geophysics Station Margiono in Kupang, Tuesday, February 27, as reported by Antara.

The M 5.2 earthquake occurred today, Tuesday 27 February, at 12.49 WITA in the Southeast Coast of Malacca or at a distance of 20 km southeast of West Malacca, Malacca, at a depth of 10 km.

BMKG also noted that there were 10 aftershocks with a magnitude below 5.2.

Margiono reminded the public not to trust false information related to earthquakes or tsunamis.

He emphasized that the earthquake that occurred today did not have the potential for a tsunami.

All official information regarding the earthquake, he said, came from the BMKG and there was no such warning.

"Don't be influenced by incorrect information," he said.

This Malacca earthquake is a type of shallow earthquake due to active sea floor fault activity.

The results of the BMKG analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake was revived by rock deformation with a movement mechanism from an upward fault structure.

"The modeling results show that the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," he said.
