Mount Semeru Eruption Again With An Eruption Height Of 1,000 Meters

LUMAJANG - Mount Semeru, which has a standby status or level III on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, East Java, has again experienced an eruption with an eruption of as high as 1 kilometer.

"There was an eruption of Mount Semeru on February 27, 2024, at 16.08 WIB with an eruption height of about 1,000 meters above the peak or about 4,676 meters above sea level (masl)," said Semeru Volcano Observation Post Officer Sigit Rian Alfian as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, February 27.

According to him, the column of volcanic ash was observed to be gray with thick intensity to the west, then the eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 107 seconds.

Eight hours earlier, the mountain which had a height of 3,676 meters above the eruption, precisely at 08.04 WIB with a column height of volcanic ash was observed to be about 600 meters above the peak or about 4,276 meters above sea level.

The volcanic ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity to the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 121 seconds.

Previously, at 5.56 WIB, Mount Semeru had erupted with a height of volcanic ash column observed about 300 meters above the peak or 3,976 meters above the peak. The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate to thick intensity to the southwest.

As of Tuesday afternoon, three times the highest mountain on the island of Java has experienced an eruption, but so far the eruption has not interfered with the activities of residents around the slopes of Mount Semeru.

From January 1 to February 27, 2024, at 17.00 WIB, Mount Semeru was recorded to have experienced 76 eruptions recorded by officers at the Mount Semeru Observation Post located on Mount Sawur, Sumberwuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency.
