WEST PAPUA - The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service (DKP) of West Papua Province predicts that the overall improvement of the cold storage facility at the fish landing base in Manokwari Regency will cost IDR 5 billion.

"After being reviewed, there was a lot of damage so it needed total improvement so that it could function again," said Acting Head of West Papua DKP Jefry Auparay in Manokwari, Monday, February 26, as reported by Antara.

He explained that the cost of repairing cold storage has not been accommodated in the 2024 parent budget, so it will be pursued through the revised APBD.

DKP West Papua has also coordinated with the Manokwari Regency Government to provide proportional support for financing cold storage improvements.

"We have communicated with the Manokwari Regency Government to synchronize the program so that they can jointly repair damaged cold storage," said Jefry.

According to him, cold storage is needed to accommodate fish caught by fishermen in large quantities with maintained quality, so as to minimize the risk of loss.

Thus, the presence of cold storage facilities will support the efforts of local governments to optimize fishery potential in Manokwari which has an impact on improving the fishermen's economy.

"Of course what is noted is how the provincial and district governments work together to build the fisheries and marine sectors," said Jefry.

Meanwhile, Head of the Regional Economy Section of the Manokwari Regional Secretariat (Setda) Rishard H Alfons explained that the district government is targeting the construction of a frozen fish storage unit.

The facility in question will be managed by regional-owned enterprises (BUMD) and currently the documents are still being studied by the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) which is then issued recommendations in accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 54 of 2017.

"The frozen fish storage facility is planned to be built in Sanggeng Village, West Manokwari District which is adjusted to market location procedures," he concluded.
