Prosecutors Delegate Rohingya Smuggling Case To Jantho District Court, 3 Foreign Citizens Will Soon Be Tried

The public prosecutor of the Aceh Besar District Attorney (Kejari) has transferred cases or cases of smuggling Rohingya immigrants with three foreign national suspects to the Jantho District Court.

"The public prosecutor has transferred the case files along with three suspects or potential defendants and evidence of smuggling Rohingya immigrants," said Head of the General Crimes Section of the Aceh Besar Kejari Firman in Banda Aceh, reported by ANTARA, Friday, February 23.

The three suspects are Anisul Hoque or AH (27), a Bangladeshi citizen, then Habibul Basyar or HB (53) and Mohammed Amin or MA (35), both are citizens of Myanmar.

Firman said the three were charged with violating Article 120 Paragraph (1) of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 6 Year 2011 concerning immigration in conjunction with Article 55 Paragraph (1) 1st of the Criminal Code.

"The threat of imprisonment is a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 15 years in prison. As well as a fine of at least Rp. 500 million and a maximum of Rp. 1.5 billion," said Firman.

Previously, the three foreign nationals were suspected of smuggling 134 Rohingya immigrants. The alleged smuggling of immigrants began on November 30, 2023.

At the time, Mohammed Amin along with two other people bought a wooden ship unit for two million taka (S Bangladesh currency) in the country.

Furthermore, Mohammed Amin along with three other colleagues recruited Rohingya immigrants who were accommodated in the Cox,s Bazar refugee camp, Bangladesh. Each Rohingya immigrant is required to pay 100 thousand taha.

After collecting 134 Rohingya immigrants, Mohammed Amin as the captain of the ship with Anisul Hoque as assistant to the captain and Habibul Basyar as the person in charge of the sailing machine to Indonesia.

They entered Indonesian territory through the coast of Blang Ulam Beach, Aceh Besar District on December 10, 2023, without immigration documents.

"The panel of judges at the Jantho District Court, Aceh Besar District, has also set a schedule for the first trial on March 6, 2024. The first trial is with the agenda of hearing the indictment of the public prosecutor," said Firman.
