JAKARTA - K-pop idol group BLACKPINK has been appointed as ambassadors for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference or COP 26, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2021.

Symbolically, their appointment took place at the residence of the British Ambassador to South Korea Simon Smith in Seoul on Thursday 26 February. Cited from Soompi, Ambassador Smith was proud to be working with Blackpink.

"The British Embassy in Seoul is very pleased to be working with BLACKPINK and YG Entertainment ahead of COP 26. We need to act to protect our planet for future generations. We hope that BLINKs (BLACKPINK fans) around the world will join us in supporting this campaign", he explained.

Meanwhile, at yesterday's event, a letter from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was also read for this K-pop idol group consisting of Jennie, Jisoo, Rose, and Lisa.

"Your recent video 'Climate Action in Your Area #COP26' was a huge success, it was viewed over 10 million times across social media platforms. Climate change is the most important issue of our time. Voice your voice on this critical issue", Prime Minister Johnson said in the letter, as reported by Koreatimes.

BLACKPINK said they understood the importance of this issue, urging fans to join the initiative.

"The first step is to educate ourselves about climate change. We need to know what is happening because it affects all of us. We want to learn more, and we hope our fans too", said BLACKPINK in a statement via YG Entertainment.

In December 2020, BLACKPINK appeared in a video promoting the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021. The quartet is considered one of the most influential musicians on social media, with around 57.7 million subscribers on their YouTube channel, second only to Justin Bieber.
