JAKARTA - President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday Russian scientists had almost created a vaccine for cancer that would soon be available to patients.
In a comment on President Putin's television, "we have almost reached the creation of cancer vaccines and new generation immunomodulators".
"I hope this technology will soon be used effectively as an individual therapeutic method," President Putin said.
However, President Putin did not specify what type of cancer the proposed vaccine would target, or how.
Meanwhile, a number of countries and companies are working on cancer vaccines. Last year, the UK Government signed an agreement with Germany-based BioNTech to launch clinical trials that provide "personalized cancer treatment", which aims to reach 10,000 patients by 2030.
Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck & Co are developing an experimental cancer vaccine, which according to a mid-stage study can reduce the chances of recurrence or death from melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, to half after three years of treatment.
It is known, currently there are six licensed vaccines against human papillomavirus (HPV) that cause many types of cancer, including cervical cancer, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as vaccines against hepatitis B (HBV), which can cause liver cancer.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Russia developed its own Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19, as well as selling it to a number of countries, despite Russia's domestic reluctance to get vaccinated.
President Putin himself said he had used the Sputnik vaccine, in an effort to convince the public of its efficacy and safety.
