5 Days Of Demak Floods Have Not Receded, Pantura Is Still Completely Paralyzed

DEMAK - The flood that hit Demak, Central Java, had lasted for five days without showing any signs of receding, Monday, February 12. This flood was triggered by the breakdown of the Wulan River embankment which submerged 38 villages in 7 sub-districts, causing the paralysis of the national road with a water level of up to 1 meter.

The number of refugees continues to grow, surpassing 21 thousand people who fled in 60 locations from Demak to Kudus.

In a flood condition in Karanganyar District, Demak, on the fifth day, the Demak-Kudus pantura route was still completely paralyzed with flood water levels exceeding 1 meter.

The increase in the water discharge of the Wulan River exacerbated the flooding flowing from the collapse of the embankment, continuing to increase the water discharge in settlements.

According to the latest data from BPBD Demak as of February 11, 2024 at 18.00 WIB, the number of victims affected by the flood reached 75,667 residents, with 21,197 of whom fled at 60 evacuation points from Demak to spread to several refugee camps in Kudus Regency. The location of the collapse of the embankment on the city boundary speeds up the evacuation process to the Kudus area.

Head of Jati Sub-district, Kudus Regency, Fiza Akbar, said that on the fifth day the flood was still hitting its settlements. Although two days earlier it had receded, now the water has risen again due to the increase in the water discharge of the Wulan River.

Luckily, all members of the residents survived and were successfully evacuated after waiting several hours on the roof of the roof.

Flood management continues to be pursued by various parties, including the use of water pumps and the patching of emergency embankments at broken points which are carried out day and night.

However, the high discharge of the Wulan River and its width of the embankment became obstacles in the process of repairing the emergency embankment which took a long time.
