JAKARTA - Candidate for Vice President number 3 Mahfud MD revealed the opposing movement of the university rector who stated that democracy in Indonesia was fine ahead of the 2024 General Election.
This was conveyed by Mahfud via a tweet on the X (Twitter) account quoted on Tuesday, January 5. There are three important points in Mahfud's tweet about the opposing movement.
"Sth salut-sahutan dozens of universities issued a petition because of ethical violations and neutrality of government officials in democracy (elections), a movement emerged. Several rectors in other universities were approached to make statements (some were immediately recorded by officers)," Mahfud tweeted at @mohmahfudmd.
The first point is to appreciate Jokowi's leadership as in dealing with COVID-19. Furthermore, the 2024 election went well and finally, "A group of people cannot impose their will on the people," Mahfud said.
According to Mahfud, there were rectors who were immediately asked to make text template videos that had been prepared and then went viral.
"There are also rectors who do not want to do it and reject it openly. Let's build Indonesia with a dignified democracy," said Mahfud.
Previously, Gajah Mada University (UGM) criticized Jokowi's government through a petition called Petition Bulaksumur on Wednesday, January 31.
This criticism arose after seeing the dynamics of national politics and concerns about actions deemed to deviate from the moral principles of democracy, people, and social justice.
Professor of the Faculty of Psychology UGM, Prof. Koentjoro read out the petition at Balairung UGM, attended by a number of professors, lecturers, and students. They expressed concern about ethical violations at the Constitutional Court, the involvement of law enforcement officers in the democratic process, and the contradictory statement of President Jokowi regarding the neutrality of public officials in political campaigns.
Not only UGM, the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) Yogyakarta also voiced criticism through the statement 'Indonesia Emergency Statement' on Thursday, February 1.
UII Chancellor Prof Fathul Wahid, together with university leaders, professors, lecturers, foundations, students, and alumni, expressed concern about the abuse of government authority ahead of the 2024 General Election.
In addition, Lecturers, professors, alumni to students from Universitas Airlangga (Unair) Surabaya, are concerned about the political situation under President Jokowi's administration which is considered concerning.
Unair highlighted the democratic condition ahead of the 2024 General Election which was considered concerning. In his statement, Unair reminded Jokowi that the public hopes that the head of state can carry out the ethics of the republic and care for democracy.
